How to Help Somebody Going Through a Mental Health Crisis?

Foods are important in maintaining our mental health. Some foods elevate or encourage poor mental health while others promote good mental health. In order to help a person that is undergoing through a mental health crisis, they should take foods that promote good mental health. These foods are rich in minerals, vitamins and nutrients that are essential for mental health.

Magnesium is a major mineral that is found in many foods that range from vegetables to fruits. They include nuts, seeds, avocados, bananas, dark leafy greens e.g. kale and spinach. Magnesium plays a major role in mental health as it can be used in place of lithium. This is because they act similar thus can share some receptor sites in the brain. Magnesium helps in treatment of stress and encourages and increases the quality of sleep that is needed by people suffering from bipolar disorder, an example of a mental health crisis. People suffering from a mental health crisis should be encouraged to take foods that are rich in magnesium.

Somebody going through a mental health crisis should avoid some foods that increase or makes them more ill. These foods do not serve any purpose in the body nor the brain. These foods include caffeine that triggers or causes mood swings, manic episodes and induces insomnia by impairing sleep. Caffeine is also addictive and makes its users feel awful and jittery. Sugar is another food to avoid as it induces mood swings due to the highs and lows associated with it. It also damages the nerves that are essential to the central nervous system thus makes its users prone to forget as it interferes with memory formation. Memories and unchanged mood swings are signs that show people have a good mental health. Avoiding caffeine and sugars offers a solution for mental health.

There are remedies that are used to treat people undergoing mental health crisis that include psychotherapy for instance cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy involves examining relationships between feelings, behavior and thoughts of the patient. The therapist and patient are a team and work together in order to help the patient recover from the mental illness. It is based on distorted thoughts rather than realistic thoughts that lead to the unhealthy emotions that are negative for instance anxiety and depression. During therapy, the patients should be allowed to express how they feel without interrupting.

Another solution to mental health crisis is regularly taking tests that help to determine an individual's mood. These tests are useful as agitation or mood swings in most cases reflect mental health crisis that include anxiety or depression. The symptoms should be present for at least six months in order to determine if somebody to be determined if they are undergoing a mental health crisis. One should first determine his or her symptoms and categories that help in diagnosing his or her own mood. An individual should later complete filling a form that is a diagnostic summary.
